The first official meeting of the Eater Readers was on Saturday.
Although the turnout was meager and a lowly and ashamed member didn't finish the book (ummm, me) it was a definite success.
First to food.
Thanks to Courtney for bringing chocolate covered strawberries and O'Henry bars- sometimes referred to as Scotcheroos- and to Nicole for bringing dirt and worms. What a lovely allusion to the book, as we pondered on Uncle Augustus' unlikely and oh so bothersome addiction to eating whatever insect (dead or alive) that crosses his path. But mainly we just ate.
And then to reading.
The book wasn't a favorite, and ironically enough, it wasn't much discussed due to a distraught affiliate (me. again.) who didn't want the ending to be prematurely revealed. Still to be finished.
So, one might ask- is this really a book club? Or an excuse to assemble as comrades? Or just one more reason to eat?
Well, luckily the few and devoted that finished the book can sleep easy, knowing they truly fulfill the requirements of such a club- reading the book.
Book number two: "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett
Synopsis: The Help is about a young white woman in the early 1960s in Mississippi who becomes interested in the plight of the black ladies' maids that every family has working for them. She writes their stories about mistreatment, abuse and heartbreaks of working in white families' homes, all just before the Civil Rights revolution.

Food and reading?
Well, yes. What other combination inspires such happiness?
By such happiness I mean enjoying the literary intricacies of another world while tasting the deliciousness of our own. Pleasing the intellectual and gastronomical palates simultaneously. Sharing two loves in the perfect summer.
That is where it all begins. A club that helps us check one more book off the summer reading list. Meetings that help us enjoy delectable treats- and set goals for becoming active. Exercise club, anyone?
Join us in our journey of discovering how to increase passions for reading and eating all together.
Book number one: "Petronella Saves Nearly Everyone" By Dene Low
Synopsis: You would think Petronella's sixteenth birthday would be cause for celebration. After all, fashionable friends are arriving at her country estate near London, teas are being served, and her coming out party promises to be a resplendent affair. Everything is falling nicely into place, until, suddenly--it isn't. For Petronella discovers that her guardian, Uncle Augustus T. Percival, has developed a most unVictorian compulsion: He must eat bugs. Worse still, because he is her guardian, Uncle Augustus is to attend her soiree and his current state will most definitely be an embarrassment.
